There are multiple reasons why a wisdom tooth would require an extraction, including a tooth infection or abscess, periodontal disease, extensive decay, or a fracture. The most common reason is that the tooth is angled and impacted, which can create a “food trap” where bacteria and plaque can accumulate and cause inflammation, redness, and infection. We recommend that all patients between the ages of 18 and 25 having their wisdom teeth evaluated to determine if they need to be removed. The evaluation will include a 3D cone beam image to allow proper visualization of the surrounding structures. This scan will enable your dentist to detect any nerve damage (lower jaw) or sinus damage (upper jaw).

During the procedure, one of our dentists will use a local anesthetic to numb the tooth, jawbone, and surrounding gums. While pressure is put on the tooth so it can be gently removed, the anesthetic will prevent you from feeling pain. The local anesthetic in combination with one of our dental sedation options is an effective way to manage your dental anxiety and guarantee a pain-free dental experience.
